About Labna (Yogurt Cheese)

Labna, also known as labneh, is a rich and creamy Middle Eastern yogurt cheese that adds a burst of tangy flavor to any dish. Made by straining yogurt until it reaches a thick, spreadable consistency, Labna is a versatile staple in Middle Eastern cuisine. It’s often enjoyed with a drizzle of olive oil, a sprinkle of herbs, or as a base for dips and spreads. Whether you’re looking to elevate your breakfast, enhance your appetizers, or simply enjoy a nutritious snack, Labna offers a deliciously simple way to bring authentic Mediterranean flavors into your kitchen.

Ingredients

4 cups plain yogurt (not Greek)

2 tablespoons za’atar (oregano spice blend)

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil

Preparation

01Place a mesh strainer over a large bowl, then line the strainer with 3 clean layers of cheesecloth.
02Place yogurt in cheesecloth.
03Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or approximately 12 hours) to allow yogurt to drain.
04To serve, spread yogurt cheese evenly onto a dish, then garnish with a sprinkle of za’atar and a drizzle of olive oil.
05Serve with warm pita bread and cucumbers for dipping.
