About Philly Cheesesteak

This homemade Philly cheesesteak recipe is a delicious twist on the classic sandwich, especially when paired with a rich, velvety cheese sauce made from scratch. This sauce, crafted with a blend of sharp cheddar and provolone, adds a bold and creamy flavor that perfectly complements the savory, thinly sliced steak. By combining the cheeses with heavy cream and milk, the sauce achieves a smooth, luscious texture that generously coats the meat and soft hoagie roll. Every bite brings together the tender steak, melted cheese, and sautéed onions, creating an indulgent must-make sandwich.

Ingredients for Cheese Sauce

1 tablespoon butter

1 1/2 tablespoons flour

1 cup milk

1/3 cup heavy cream

3 ounces extra sharp cheddar cheese slices

3 ounces smoked provolone slices

Salt and pepper

Ingredients for Steak

1 yellow onion, sliced

Oil

14 ounces shaved steak

2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

4 hoagie rolls

1 tablespoon butter

Mayonnaise

Crushed red pepper

Preparation

01To make the cheese sauce, in a saucepan, melt butter. Whisk in the flour until it’s light brown for 1-2 minutes.
02Slowly stir in the milk and heavy cream. Bring to a light boil.
03Remove from heat then add the cheese slices. Stir until fully melted.
04Add salt and pepper to taste.
05Slice the onion finely, then set aside.
06Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add oil.
07As the oil heats, add in the shaved steak and chop up as best as possible. Cook for 2 minutes and add the onion.
08As the steak cooks, add salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and smoked paprika. Mix well and allow to burn.
09Once the steak is fully cooked, prepare the hoagie rolls for filling.
10Heat a separate pan over medium heat and add the butter. Toast hoagie rolls until golden brown.
11Spread the mayonnaise on the rolls if desired.
12Place the cheesesteak inside the rolls and top with the cheese sauce and red pepper flakes.
