Ingredients for Pizza Cone Dough

1 cup milk, room temperature

1 tablespoon yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting

2 teaspoons olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 egg, lightly beaten

Ingredients for Pizza Cone Filling

7 ounces pepperoni, sliced

12 ounces marinara sauce

1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded

Preparation

01For the cones, in a small bowl, whisk together the milk, yeast, and sugar, then set aside for 10 minutes to allow the yeast to activate.
02In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, olive oil, and salt.
03Pour the yeast mixture into the bowl with the flour mixture and combine, using your hands if needed, until the mixture forms a smooth dough, about 5 minutes.
04Cover the dough with a kitchen towel and place in a warm spot to proof for 30 minutes.
05Preheat the oven to 300°F and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
06For this step you will need metal cones for baking. Wrap the metal cones with aluminum foil and grease the outer surface with butter.
07Transfer the risen dough to a lightly floured work surface and knead for 2 minutes.
08Divide the dough in half, then use a rolling pin to stretch half the dough into a rectangle 1/2-inch thick. Using a sharp knife, slice the dough into long vertical strips 1 inch wide.
09Take one strip of dough and, beginning at the base of the cone, wrap the dough around the mold. Overlap the previous dough as you proceed up the cone with each piece slightly folded over to create the shape of a croissant. Repeat the process for the remaining dough, wrapping each cone with dough. and wrap all the cones in a croissant style.
10Place the pizza cones wide end down onto the baking tray and brush with the beaten egg.
11Bake for 10 minutes until crispy and golden brown.
12Remove the pizza cones from the oven and let them cool on the tray for 5 minutes. As they cool heat up the marinara sauce.
13Once you slide the pizza cones off the metal, fill the cones, first adding one tablespoon of cheese into the base of the cone, then filling it with with hot marinara sauce and pepperoni. Top off the pizza cones with the remaining cheese.
14Place pizza cones in an oven safe mug or rack upright. Bake for an additional 4-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
