About Cannoli French Toast

A decadent dish that marries the flavors of traditional cannoli with the comfort of French toast. Thick slices of bread are dipped in a rich mixture and cooked to golden perfection, creating a crisp exterior and soft, fluffy interior. The toast is then stacked and filled with a sweet, creamy ricotta filling, mixed with chocolate chips. Finished with a dusting of powdered sugar and sometimes a drizzle of chocolate, Cannoli French Toast offers a delightful blend of textures and tastes. This indulgent breakfast or brunch treat is the perfect flair to the morning table.

Ingredients for Cannoli Filling

1 cup ricotta cheese

1/3 cup powdered sugar

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup mini chocolate chips

Ingredients for French Toast

Sliced bread

1 cup milk

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Preparation

01Before starting, strain the ricotta cheese. Wrap the cheese with a paper towel or cheese cloth and let it sit for 30 minutes.
02To make the cannoli filling, in a bowl, whisk together ricotta cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth and fully combined. If you prefer a sweeter filling, add more powdered sugar.
03Fold in mini chocolate chips.
04Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator to chill / thicken.
05To make the French toast, in a large bowl, whisk together milk, eggs, vanilla, and cinnamon.
06Grease a pan or skillet with butter or nonstick cooking spray and place over medium heat.
07Place a slice of bread in the egg mixture, ensuring that both sides are fully covered.
08Set the bread in the pan / skillet and cook until the bread is a light to medium golden color. Flip the bread and repeat on the other side.
09Remove from the pan and repeat the process with the remaining bread and egg mixture.
10Remove the cannoli filling from the refrigerator and place it in a piping or plastic storage bag. If using a plastic storage bag, be sure to cut the tip.
11Assemble the bread in a stack and top with cannoli filling and extra chocolate chips. Or, roll each piece of French toast and pipe the cannoli filling inside to replicate a traditional cannoli look.
12Serve warm with butter and maple syrup, if desired.
